<\/p>\n

Virilio anticipates an ominous shift wrought by the interval of light as it
\nproliferates in "teletopical technologies" that allow for speedier
\ntransmissions. "Act[ing] over distance" is, as a result, increasingly
\ncommonplace. Virilio builds a case for the implications of this shift for
\ndemography, urbanization, and insularity–matters that can be understood
\nrelative to human culture at-large and also to the academic institution.<\/p>\n

Virilio is important for his foreboding stance toward the "critical
\ntransition" involving an onset of real-time technologies that "kill ‘present’
\ntime by isolating it from its presence here and now<\/i> for the sake of
\nanother commutative space that is no longer composed of our ‘concrete presence’
\nin the world, but of a ‘discrete telepresence’ whose enigma remains forever
\nintact" (4). It’s not entirely clear to me, though, how concrete presence and
\ndiscrete telepresence are divisible or separable.
\nTwitter<\/a> seems to me a fine example of the
\nimplements Virilio would find so disconcerting (more general transmission
\ntechnologies, too, of course, are worrisome to him in ~1993). <\/p>\n

The third interval–light–is positioned here as a threat, as a force with
\ntremendous destructive power. Teletopical technologies, following the
\ntransition, will, if they haven’t already, crush the present as we know it,
\nconverting reality and duration into "’alternation’ or ‘flickering’ that is also
\nrelated to a sort of commotion<\/i> of present duration" (7). Virilio goes on
\nto suggest the implications of this "radical inversion" for cities. But I want
\nto use it to understand skepticism toward distance–and distant reading (like
\nWaters’ complaint<\/a>
\nabout Moretti’s work). Two thoughts about this:<\/p>\n

(-1-) One is cautionary. If distant reading is justified on the basis
\nof efficiency (it makes large bodies of texts differently accessible), is it
\njust another example of what Virilio calls the "tyranny of real time"? We
\ncan generate distant readings, in other words, and while they will make texts
\ndifferently accessible (allowing scalable designations, etc.), do they
\nsimultaneously overload the present with an assumption that it can hold more?
\nI suppose I’m not making this plain. If the article abstract, as a form of
\ndistant reading, functions as a teaser into the article, the present moment is
\nstill held under a heavy burden by x+1 number of abstracts. Distant
\nreading paradoxically reduces and<\/i> multiplies the labors of reading.
\nStill, this is unavoidable, and the conditions for reading the discipline are
\neven less tenable without such measures. A cynical response could expand
\nthe notion of domotics (domestic robotics) to something like acadomotics (the
\nreduction and routinization of intellectual life; the flooding of a working
\npresent, the disolution of duration).<\/p>\n

(-2-) The second requires a switch from the broad domain of human culture to
\nthe circulation of scholarship. Virilio writes, "Where, in the past,
\nphysical displacements from one point to another presupposed a departure, a
\nvoyage, and an arrival, more than a century ago revolutions in modes of
\ntransport had already set in place a liquidation of delay and oriented the very
\nnature of travel (on foot, on horseback, and in a car!) toward the arrival at a
\nfinal point that remained, however, a restricted arrival<\/i> by virtue of the
\nvery duration of the voyage" (8). This goes along with the critical
\ntransition: teletopic technologies move the present instant from scarcity to
\nabundance (the attention economy is embroiled in this transition), from delay
\nand duration to plentitude. Read this quotation as an analogy to publication
\ncycles. Restricted arrival gives way to general arrival; this is true for
\njournals, such as The Journal of
\nLiteracy and Technology<\/a>, that use rolling deadlines. Rolling cycles
\nchallenge us to read differently. Duration fades, the journal is
\npotentially ever-present, its departures and arrivals highly irregular. How to
\nread such a thing?<\/p>\n

"Today we are beginning to realize that systems of telecommunications do not
\nmerely confine extension<\/i><\/b>, but that, in the transmission of
\nmessages and images, they also eradicate duration<\/i> or delay<\/b>" (3).<\/p>\n

"What is becoming critical here is no longer the concept of three spatial
\ndimensions, but a fourth, temporal dimension<\/b>–in other words, that of the
\npresent itself<\/b>" (4).<\/p>\n

"In the future, speed will be used more and more to act over distance<\/i><\/b>,
\nbeyond the sphere of influence of the human body and its behavioral
\nbiotechnology" (5).<\/p>\n

"Critical transition<\/i> is thus not a gratuitous expression: behind this
\nvocable there lurks a real crisis of the temporal dimension of immediate
\naction<\/i><\/b>" (7).<\/p>\n

"Where, in the past, physical displacements from one point to another
\npresupposed a departure<\/b>, a voyage<\/b>, and an arrival<\/b>, more
\nthan a century ago revolutions in modes of transport had already set in place a
\nliquidation of delay and oriented the very nature of travel (on foot, on

"Thus the mobile<\/i><\/b> human who had become automobile<\/i><\/b>
\nwill now become motile<\/i><\/b>, willfully limiting his or her bodily
\nsphere of influence to a few simple gestures, to the emission–or zapping–of
\nseveral signs" (9).<\/p>\n

"Telemarketing, tele-employment, fax work, bit-net, and e-mail transmissions
\nat home, in apartments, or in cabled high rises–these might be called
\ncocooning<\/b>: an urbanization of real time thus follows the urbanization of
\nreal space" (11).<\/p>\n
