<\/p>\n

Syverson’s The Wealth of Reality<\/i>–revised from her dissertation, which
\nwon the Berlin and Burns awards in 1995–calls for a reconceptualization of
\nwriting activity as radically situated<\/b> in the interest of moving us away
\nfrom reductionism<\/b> (182) and the idealized atomistic-individual<\/b>
\nwriter (synecdochic relationships fail to explain<\/i> complexity). That
\nis, an ecology of composition<\/b> affords us greater explanatory power<\/b>
\n(203) in an era when the increasing presence of technology<\/b> is adding
\ncomplexity to the environments<\/b> in which writers write (205-206).
\nUnderstanding the rich ecologies of composition depends on a methodological
\nframework<\/b> drawn from complex systems<\/b> thinking and distributed
\ncognition<\/b> influences. The writing environment is integral<\/b>, and our
\nunderstanding of "writers, readers, and texts" must take the environment into
\naccount.<\/p>\n

Syverson’s method involves a blend of ecological perspectives on situated and
\ndistributed cognition and case study<\/b>. In the opening chapter, she
\nintroduces the terms that constitute a simple graph (the analytical tools for
\nthis ecological method). <\/p>\n

Four attributes of ecological systems:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • distribution (7)<\/li>\n
  • emergence (10)<\/li>\n
  • embodiment (12)<\/li>\n
  • enaction (13)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Five dimensions or manifestations of "every object, process, fact, idea,
    \nconcept, activity, structure, [and] event" in an ecological system:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • physical-material dimension (including technology) (18)<\/li>\n
    • social dimension (19)<\/li>\n
    • psychological dimension (19)<\/li>\n
    • spatial dimension (20)<\/li>\n
    • temporal dimension (20)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The "matrix" at the convergence of these two lists grounds us in a more
      \ncomplex (counter-reductive; expansive) framework for studying writing in situ.\n<\/p>\n

      Defn.<\/p>\n

      ecology<\/b>: "a larger system that includes environmental structures, such
      \nas pens, paper, computers, books, telephones, fax machines, photocopiers,
      \nprinting presses, and other natural and human-constructed features, as well as
      \nother complex systems operating at various levels of scale, such as families,
      \nglobal economies, publishing systems, theoretical frames, academic disciplines,
      \nand language itself. For my purposes, then, an ecology is a kind of meta-complex
      \nsystem composed of interrelated and interdependent complex systems and their
      \nenvironmental structures and processes" (5).<\/p>\n

      emergence<\/b>: Syverson offers three senses of emergence: structural,
      \ndynamic, and integral or combined. The first applies to the structure of
      \nhierarchical organization; the second applies to history or processes of change.
      \n"Emergent properties suggest that all of our classificatory systems arte
      \nactually open-ended, explanatory theories rather than closed, deterministic
      \ncontainers" (11).<\/p>\n

      distributed cognition<\/b>: "the way cognitive processes are shared, that
      \nis, both divided and coordinated among people and structures in the environment"
      \n(9).<\/p>\n

      situated cognition<\/b>: "cognitive processes are always embedded in
      \nspecific social, cultural, and physical-material situations, which determine not
      \nonly how cognitive processes unfold but also the meanings they have for
      \nparticipants" (9).<\/p>\n

      "Suddenly [with Syverson’s discovery of Hutchins] thinking<\/b> was
      \nrevealed as not simply a matter of logical processing<\/b> neatly managed by a
      \nbrain in splendid isolation but as a complex ensemble of activities and
      \ninteractions<\/b> among brains, hands, eyes, ears, other people, and an
      \nastonishing variety of structures in the environment, from airplane cockpits to
      \ncereal boxes to institutions" (xiv).<\/p>\n

      "Technological advances<\/b> have proven to increase<\/b> rather than
      \nreduce the complexity<\/b> and difficulty of our work<\/b>. We cannot hope
      \nto understand these situations by studying individuals in isolation<\/b>; we
      \nneed an ecological approach<\/b> that considers the dynamics of systems of
      \npeople situated in and codetermining particular social and material
      \nenvironments" (xv).<\/p>\n

      "In a complex system, a network of independent agents<\/b>–people, atoms,
      \nneurons, or molecules, for instance–act and interact<\/b> in parallel with
      \neach other, simultaneously reacting to and co-constructing their own
      \nenvironment" (3).<\/p>\n

      "Complex systems<\/b> are also distributed across space and time<\/b> in
      \nan ensemble of interrelated activities" (7).<\/p>\n

      "Away from this familiar supportive environment<\/b> [full of tools and
      \nresources, see p. 10], writers think and write differently<\/b>; when writing
      \nwhile on vacation or at a conference, for example, they may feel either stripped
      \nand helpless or liberated and refreshed" (10).<\/p>\n

      "Embodiment<\/b> grounds our conceptual structures, our interactions with
      \neach other and with the environment, our perceptions, and our actions" (13).<\/p>\n

      "Vision<\/b> is enacted<\/b>–what we see is brought forth (emerges)
      \nthrough the coordination of our physical structure and our cognitive and
      \nphysical activity" (15).<\/p>\n

      "Composing practices <\/b>such as freewriting, invention heuristics,
      \ndiagramming, outlining, sketching, and marking manuscripts for revision also
      \nstructure the form and content <\/b>of what is written" (17).<\/p>\n

      "The five dimensions<\/b> outlined here [physical, social, psychological,
      \nspatial, and temporal] are not categories of classes<\/b> of objects; they are
      \nfive aspects<\/b> of every object, process, fact, idea, concept, activity,
      \nstructure, event, and so on. Thus, although we can distinguish these
      \ndimensions, they cannot be ‘separated out’<\/b> because they are independently
      \nspecified. As in geometry, single-dimension objects can only exist
      \ntheoretically, in the imagination" (22).<\/p>\n

      "I am not arguing for a mathematical approach to composing, but I am trying
      \nto get at complexities in ecological systems that have not been addressed by
      \ntheorists in rhetoric and composition" (23).<\/p>\n

      "As contexts<\/b> and technologies<\/b> for writing continue to change at
      \nan ever accelerating pace, we cannot cling to our familiar, comfortable
      \nassumptions<\/b> about writers, readers, and texts, or we will find ourselves
      \nincreasingly irrelevant and obstructive" (27).<\/p>\n

      "Composition<\/b> does not consist in transferring what is inside the head
      \nonto paper or a computer screen. It is a manifestation<\/b> of the
      \ncoordination between internal and external structures<\/b>, which are
      \nconstituted by and expressed through cultural and cognitive dimensions of every
      \nhuman activity" (183).<\/p>\n

      "In my opinion, the real value<\/b> in taking an ecological perspective<\/b>
      \nis that it compels us to ask a better set of questions<\/b> about the dynamic
      \nrelationships among writers, readers, and texts and drives us toward a deeper
      \nunderstanding of composition" (206).<\/p>\n
