<\/p>\n

In this brief article, Wysocki complicates the dichotomy between image<\/b>
\nand word<\/b>, a division reinforced in the work of Kress, who partitions
\nwords<\/b> and their "temporal and sequential logic<\/b>" from "image-presentations<\/b>"
\nand their "spatial and simultaneous logic<\/b>" (56). Because alphabetic text
\nis arranged, it calls "visual attention to itself" (58) and because visually
\ndesigned objects are constituted with temporal strategies, we must recognize the
\nmaterial constraints<\/b> that bear on any composition. That is, we should
\nalways try to recognize that which is taken to be natural<\/b>, while
\ndetailing the social<\/b> and historical<\/b> constraints<\/b> involved in
\nany design. Finally, rather than asking what is lost, Wysocki focuses on a more
\nconstructive angle: what is possible<\/b>?<\/p>\n

^Vocabulary persists as a problem here. Likening image and word is
\nuseful from a design perspective, but how can we qualify our use of those terms
\nwithout reinscribing the dichotomy?<\/p>\n

"The lesson is that things<\/b> can be put to many uses<\/b>, often
\nneither just<\/b> nor humane<\/b>" (55).<\/p>\n

"I have learned in the process of developing communications that it is always
\nworth asking how our materials have acquired the constraints<\/b> they have
\nand hence why, often, certain materials and designs are not considered
\navailable<\/b> for certain uses" (56).<\/p>\n

"Did you read my title as "a way with words"<\/b> or "away with words"<\/b>?"
\n(56).<\/p>\n

"That is why, then, I wish to question what becomes unavailable<\/b> when
\nwe think of word<\/b> and image<\/b> as Kress has suggested we do, as
\nbound logically and respectively with time and with space"<\/b> (56).<\/p>\n

"If we are to help people in our classes learn how to compose texts that
\nfunction as they hope, they need consider how they use the spaces<\/b> and
\nnot just one time<\/b> that can be shaped on pages" (57).<\/p>\n

"Instead, we should acknowledge that when we work with what is on pages or
\nother surfaces, alphabetic text is always<\/b> part of what must be
\nvisually arranged<\/b> and can be designed to call more or less visual
\nattention<\/b> to itself (with the current academic and literary convention to be
\nthat of calling less attention to itself)" (58).<\/p>\n

"And so to use image<\/b> to name some class of objects<\/b> that
\nfunction in opposition to word<\/b> is thus either to make an arbitrary cut<\/b>
\ninto the world of designed visual objects or to try to encompass a class so
\nlarge the encompassing term loses function. To say that all these objects rely
\non a logic of space<\/b> is to miss their widely varying compositional
\npotentials<\/b>" (59).<\/p>\n

"By focusing on the human shaping of material<\/b>, and on the ties of
\nmaterial to human practices, we might be in better positions to ask after the
\nconsequences not only of how we use water but also of how we use paper, ink, and
\npixels to shape<\/b>–for better or worse–the actions of others<\/b>" (59).<\/p>\n
