<\/p>\n

Johnson-Eilola both suggests and, to a degree, enacts a fragmentary,
\ncontingent sort of postmodern textuality<\/b> in "The Database and the Essay."
\nHe applies articulation theory<\/b> and symbolic-analytic work<\/b>, as he
\ndoes in Datacloud<\/i>, to make sense of what he calls fragmentary texts<\/b>–the
\nsmall pieces joined by links and other connective systems built upon discursive
\nnetworks. The essay begins with questions about where texts come from<\/b>.
\nDrawing on Porter’s intertextuality<\/b>, in the first half of the essay
\nJohnson-Eilola explains the implications of intellectual property<\/b> law (as
\nwell as the limits of copyright) (203). Intellectual property law, he says, is
\ncatching up with postmodern textuality, leaving us with two contending poles:
\nprivate, owned, and controlled versus shared, fragmentary, free, and contingent.
\nRelated are two trajectories: the decline of the unified subject and texts that
\ncirculate free of economic bearing (academic) and the rise of fragmentation with
\nrecognition of the value of such texts (private and proprietary) (212).<\/p>\n

Ultimately, this adds up to two considerations for writing teachers:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Because we can’t detach writing from economic forces, expanded notions
    \n of writing<\/b> outside the classroom justify our work with writing in a
    \n "broader sphere…rather than a narrower one" (212). <\/li>\n
  2. Collection<\/b> is social and political; the "new notion of writing"
    \n values connection<\/b> (stringing the contingent and fragmentary together)
    \n (212).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Toward examples of the postmodern textuality he sets out to explain with
    \narticulation theory and symbolic-analytic work, Johnson-Eilola describes for
    \nemerging forms of writing in the second half of the essay: blogs<\/b> (213),
    \ndatabases<\/b> and search engines<\/b> (perhaps two separate forms here)
    \n(218), nonlinear media editing<\/b> (223), and web architectures<\/b> (225).\n<\/p>\n

    "’All texts are interdependent<\/b>: We understand a text only as far as we
    \nunderstand its ancestors’ ("Intertextuality" 34). But this interdependence of
    \ntexts is not without its own rifts, ruptures, and politics. In a bizarre way<\/b>,
    \nthe very interconnected nature<\/b> of texts holds them apart<\/b>" (200).
    \n^Work through this "bizarre way" and holding apart in connection. A database
    \nparadox?<\/p>\n

    "Symbolic-analytic work<\/b> focuses on the manipulation of information<\/b>
    \nand suggests connections<\/b> to a new form of writing or a new way of
    \nconceiving of writing in response to the breakdown of textuality<\/b>" (201).<\/p>\n

    "Articulation<\/b> involves the idea that ideology<\/b> functions like<\/b>
    \na language<\/b>, being constructed contingently across groups of people<\/b>
    \nover time and from context to context" (201).<\/p>\n

    "Following this brief set of analyses, I’ll attempt to play this breakdown in
    \nIP<\/b> through the lenses of articulation theory and symbolic-analytic work
    \nto describe some emerging forms of writing. These new forms of writing are
    \ninteresting because they take the generally debilitating trends of IP law (the
    \nfragmentation of content, the commoditization of text, the loss of context) and
    \nmake something useful. In a recuperative move, the new form<\/b>s of writing
    \nuse fragmentation<\/b>, loss of context<\/b>, and circulation<\/b> as
    \nmethods for creating new structures<\/b>" (204).<\/p>\n

    "The bulk of this chapter deals with the separation<\/b> we–I mean ‘we’ as
    \nrhet\/comp academics, but also, in this particular case, ‘we’ as the general
    \npublic–have constructed between ‘writing<\/b>‘ and ‘compilation<\/b>‘. In
    \nquestioning this division, I’m trying to get at an understanding of writing more
    \nproperly suited<\/b> to the role writing plays in our culture" (205).<\/p>\n

    "For better or worse–or, in fact, for better and worse–texts<\/b> no
    \nlonger function as discrete objects<\/b>, but as contingent, fragmented
    \nobjects<\/b> in circulation, as elements within constantly configured and
    \nshifting networks<\/b>" (208). <\/p>\n

    "In an important sense, understanding the search engine<\/b> as itself a
    \nform of writing<\/b> helps us understand the relationship between composition<\/b>
    \nand programming<\/b>: a search engine works by automatic, contingent
    \nrhetorics<\/b>" (220). ^Work through "automatic, contingent rhetorics."<\/p>\n

    "Indeed, search engines<\/b> make concrete and visible many of the things
    \nthat hypertext theorists have long argued for: contingent<\/b>, networked
    \ntexts<\/b>, composed with large and shifting social spaces out of literally
    \nmillions of voices" (221).<\/p>\n

    "Important to my overall project here are the ways that articulation theory
    \nand symbolic-analytic work moves through fragmentation<\/b>. They don’t deny
    \nthe force of postmodernism<\/b> or postmodern capitalism. Instead,
    \narticulation theory requires a responsible stance toward contingency and
    \nfragmentation. From an articulation theory stance, writers<\/b>–or
    \ndesigners<\/b>, more accurately–actively map fragments back into contexts
