<\/p>\n

Rather than lumping posthumanism<\/b> with the other post-isms, Brooke
\ndraws on frameworks pursued by Hayles<\/b> in How We Became Posthuman<\/i>
\nand Latour<\/b> in We Have Never Been Modern<\/i> as a way to resolve
\nrhetoric’s exceptional role in patching the nature\/culture rift (Hayles’
\ncorollary, "we have always<\/i> been posthuman" catalyzes this path of
\ninquiry). Rhetoric, a "posthuman rhetoric<\/b>" according to Brooke, is
\nrepositioned in the space of Latour’s hybrids<\/b>. Turning next to ancient
\nrhetorics<\/b>, Brooke points to Gorgias<\/b> as one whose rhetoric enacted the
\nimbroglio that resisted the polarization toward designations of artificial and
\nnatural. Like the Gordian knot Latour wishes for us to re-tie (it was unraveled
\nby modernist purification), the Gorgian knot<\/i><\/b> suggested by Brooke
\ndraws on posthumanism to furnish a both\/and compromise that, rather than viewing
\nmemory as natural<\/b> (as in orality; see Plato) or artificial<\/b> (as in
\nwriting, electracy, secondary orality [?]), instead views it as doubly
\napplicable to our "hypermediated society" (788). In other words, posthuman
\nrhetoric would keep us cognizant of the error involved in tipping too far toward
\neither a presumption of memory’s naturalness (truth in mediation, such as Rodney
\nKing film footage segmented into individual images) or its artificiality (the
\nrhetoric of antirhetoric). Brooke uses the counterparts of kairos<\/i><\/b>
\nand chronos<\/i><\/b> to explain that the disembodiment of information<\/b>
\n(e.g., w\/ King and the Challenger explosion) should call back into question the
\nmaterial manipulation of media that taken to be natural.<\/p>\n

"In fact, the network of relations<\/b> among speaking and being spoken,
\nnature and culture, and agency and determinism might seem to us the very sort of
\nGordian knot Latour seeks to retie" (783).<\/p>\n

"From its inception, rhetoric<\/b> does not claim to be anything but
\nartificial<\/b>; indeed, it is its artificiality that renders it transferable<\/b>
\nand teachable<\/b>" (784).<\/p>\n

"After Plato, rhetoric is an artificial construct<\/b>, one that encourages
\nus to conceive of our relationship to language as one of production and

"Whether or not the shift from orality to literacy carries with it a
\ncorresponding change in mental faculties, it has a radical effect on the
\nenvironment<\/b> in which we think<\/b> and act<\/b>, which amounts to the
\nsame thing, according to Edwin Hutchins. Hayles glosses Hutchins’ point: ‘Modern
\nhumans are capable of more sophisticated cognition than cavemen not because
\nmoderns are smarter…but because they have constructed smarter environments<\/b>
\nin which to work’ (289)" (786).<\/p>\n

"As our memories<\/b> and technologies<\/b> have become more artificial,
\nthey have done so only as far as they circle back and approach the appearance<\/b>
\nof the natural<\/b>" (787).<\/p>\n

"We must reconceive the canon of memory<\/b>, complicating the binary that
\nPlato provides and reopening a space within our hypermediated rhetoric for the
\nrecognition of experience" (790).<\/p>\n

"Why a postmodern rhetoric might privilege kairos<\/b> over chronos<\/b>,
\na posthuman rhetoric<\/b> would find room for both<\/b>" (791).<\/p>\n

"As our technologies tempt us with the possibility of absolute<\/b>
\n(patterned) knowledge via the purified technologies of mediation<\/b>
\n(absence), a posthuman rhetoric would require us to temper that possibility with
\nthe materially situated emergence<\/b> (presence) or opportunities<\/b>
\n(randomness)" (791).<\/p>\n
