<\/p>\n

Heidegger questions the nature of technology, seeking a corrective to
\ninstrumentalism or treatments of technology that focus merely on the technical
\nor the treat it as neutral or destined. He winds through a sequence of
\nanalytical claims set up to distinguish an essence of technology: enframing<\/b>.
\nHeidegger wants to resist both instrumentalism (means to an end) and
\nanthropological (human activity) perspectives on technology. Questioning, he
\ncontends, will open "our human existence to the essence of technology" (311). To
\nexplain causality in technology, Heidegger examines a silver chalice. He
\npresents four causal aspects that can be separated or categorized for any
\nproduced thing: materialis<\/i> (matter from which it is made), formalis<\/i>
\n(shape), finalis<\/i> (end), and efficiens<\/i> (the effect). In the four
\ncauses we find instrumentality (314). Efficiens or the occasion is the most
\ncomplex of the four because it connects with responsibility and also combines
\nboth poiesis<\/i> and physis<\/i> (which lead toward enframing?). <\/p>\n

Unless we question technology, "we remain unfree and chained to technology"
\n(311). This is why we should recognize technology as being about "bringing
\nforward" or revealing, or, that is, emphasize agency in shaping technology
\nthrough production and presenting (poiesis). Enframing, as the essence of
\ntechnology, introduces both danger (destining or destining of revealing) and
\nopportunity. Also, enframing endures or persists: this is something like a
\nperlocutionary effect of technology (if we could widen speech acts to something
\nlike technological acts): made things have a long life inflected (even
\ndetermined by) production and presentation, provided we encounter them with an
\nunderstanding of the poetic (and rhetorical). Basically, with a call for
\nquestioning technology, Heidegger affirms poetics (the creative power of
\nlanguage). "Questions Concerning" might also be read as an argument for
\nhumanized technology or critical perspectives on technology that call into check
\nits ubiquity or fervor about it being destined\/predetermined. There is
\nalso a subtext of agrarian nostalgia, longing for preindustrial days.<\/p>\n

On how to read "Questions Concerning": "We would be advised, therefore, above
\nall to pay heed to the way<\/b>, and not<\/b> to fix our attention on
\nisolated sentences and topics<\/b>" (311). <\/p>\n

"Accordingly, the correct instrumental definition of technology still does
\nnot show us technology’s essence<\/b>" (313).<\/p>\n

"The principle characteristic of being responsible is this starting something
\non its way into arrival" (316): to occasion (as we approach enframing as
\nessence). The occasion ties in with poiesis<\/i> and physis<\/i>.<\/p>\n

"The modes occasioning, the four causes, are at play, then, within bringing
\nforth" (317).<\/p>\n

"Technology is therefore no mere means. Technology is a way of revealing<\/b>"
\n(318).<\/p>\n

"The revealing that rules throughout modern technology has the character of a
\nsetting-upon, in the sense of a challenging-forth<\/b>" (321).<\/p>\n

"Modern technology, as a revealing<\/b> that orders, is thus no mere
\nhuman doing<\/b>" (324)<\/p>\n

"For idea<\/i><\/b> names not only<\/b> the nonsensuous aspect of what
\nis physically visible<\/b>. Aspect (idea<\/i>) names and also is that
\nwhich constitutes the essence in the audible, the tasteable, the tactile, in
\neverything that is in any way accessible" (325).<\/p>\n

"The word stellen<\/i> [to set<\/b>] in the name Ge-stell<\/i> [enframing]
\ndoes not only mean challenging. At the same time it should preserve the
\nsuggestion of another Stellen<\/i> from which it stems, namely that
\nproducing<\/b> and presenting<\/b> [Her-und Dar-stellen<\/i>], which in the
\nsense of poiesis<\/b>, lets what presences come forth into unconcealment<\/b>"
\n(326). <\/p>\n

"The merely instrumental<\/b>, merely anthropological<\/b> definition of
\ntechnology is therefore in principle untenable<\/b>" (326). <\/p>\n

"[Enframing<\/b>] is nothing technological, nothing on the order of a
\nmachine" (328). <\/p>\n

"The essence of modern technology lies in enframing<\/b>. Enframing belongs
\nwithin the destining of revealing<\/b>. These sentences express something
\ndifferent from the talk that we hear more frequently, to the effect that
\ntechnology is the fate of our age, where ‘fate’ means the inevitableness of an
\nunalterable course" (330).<\/p>\n

"But enframing does not simply endanger man in his relationship to himself
\nand to everything that is. As a destining, it banishes man into the kind of
\nrevealing that is an ordering" (332). Rings of Foucault in TOOT<\/i>.<\/p>\n

"Enframing<\/b> is a way of revealing that is a destining, namely, the way
\nthat challenges forth. The revealing that brings forth (poiesis) is also a way
\nthat has the character of destining" (335).<\/p>\n

"Thus enframing, as a destining of revealing, is indeed the essence of
\ntechnology, but never in the sense of genus<\/b> and essentia<\/i><\/b>"
\n(335).<\/p>\n

"Everything, then, depends upon this: that we ponder this rising and that,
\nrecollecting, we watch over it<\/b>" (337).<\/p>\n

"The essence<\/b> of technology is<\/b> in a lofty sense ambiguous<\/b>"
\n(338).<\/p>\n

"The closer we come to the danger, the more brightly do the ways into the
\nsaving power begin to shine and the more questioning we become. For
