<\/p>\n

Trimbur makes his purposes clear before working through a somewhat long and
\ncomplicated argument about renewing attention to circulation and thereby
\nrecuperating the classical canon of delivery in the context of composition
\nstudies. The problem is that delivery has dwindled into a given; it has been
\nquietly domesticated into prevalent notions of the composition classroom as an
\nuncomplicated middle-class space. In an effort to restore delivery,
\nTrimbur calls for heightened consideration of (and emphasis on) the material
\ncirculation of writing. Delivery, he explains, isn’t merely technical, but it is
\nalso political and ethical (190). <\/p>\n


\nTrimbur<\/a> sets out to accomplish the following:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. redefine delivery<\/b> because it has been neglected by compositionists;<\/li>\n
  2. account for neo-Marxist cultural studies curricula that emphasize working
    \n with "different forms and products<\/b>";<\/li>\n
  3. draw on Marx to look at how circulation materializes "contradictory
    \n social relations and processes"<\/b>;<\/li>\n
  4. and discuss writing assignments that attend explicitly to matters of
    \n imbalance<\/b> between use value and exchange value<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In questioning the prominent invocations of cultural studies in composition
    \nstudies, Trimbur suggests, drawing on Marx and commodity as a "category," the
    \nentanglement of use value and exchange value. Each are inseparable from
    \nmodes of production which implicate traces of production in the things
    \nthemselves. Composition should make this focal in considerations of texts that
    \ncirculate publicly or, that is, public writing.<\/p>\n

    "To anticipate the main line of thought, I argue that neglecting delivery has
    \nled writing teachers to equate the activity of composing with writing itself and
    \nto miss altogether the complex delivery systems through
    \nwhich writing circulates." (189)<\/p>\n

    "Imagining cultural forms and products circulating through a continuous cycle
    \nof relatively autonomous but interlocked moments has some important
    \nconsequences" (197).<\/p>\n

    On cultural studies curricula: "In other words, in the hope of fortifying
    \nstudent resistance to the dominant culture, such assignments actually smuggled
    \nin and restored unwittingly the close text-based readings of the specialist
    \ncritic as the privileged practice of the writing classroom–the old story of
    \nexplaining and having views" (198).<\/p>\n

    "Here he designates the commodity<\/b> as the “first category<\/b> in
    \nwhich bourgeois wealth presents itself ” (881) and, in effect, provides a name
    \nfor what circulates through the circuit of production, distribution, exchange,
    \nand consumption as well as the theoretical starting point for Capital<\/i>"
    \n(207).<\/p>\n

    "The process of production determines<\/b>–and distributes–a hierarchy
    \nof knowledg<\/b>e and information that is tied to the cultural authorization
    \nof expertise, professionalism, and respectability<\/b>" (210).<\/p>\n

    "If anything, this wish for such a transformation<\/b> [switch to public
    \nwriting], although surely understandable and well-intentioned, amounts
    \nnevertheless to what I’ve already mentioned as the ‘one-sided’ view of
    \nproduction that Marx critiques–the fallacy<\/b> that by changing the manner
    \nof writing<\/b>, one can somehow solve<\/b> the problem of circulation<\/b>"
    \n(212).<\/p>\n

    "What I am trying to do is amplify the students’ sense of what constitutes
    \nthe production of writing<\/b> by tracing its circulation<\/b> in order to
    \nraise questions about how professional expertise<\/b> is articulated to the
    \nsocial formation, how it undergoes rhetorical transformations<\/b> (or
    \n“passages of form”), and how it might produce not only individual careers but
    \nalso socially useful knowledge<\/b>" (214).<\/p>\n
