<\/p>\n

Rice refers to two courses he taught at UF called "Writing about Cool" to
\npresent a pedagogy of cool, rooted in composition, hypertext, cultural studies,
\nand juxtaposition. The courses traces cool through McLuhan, Baraka and
\nRobert Farris Thompson; the pedagogical model advocates juxtaposition as an
\nelectrate strategy for the production of hypertext (a making\/doing project
\nrather than interpreting or coming to awareness\/appreciation). Using the locus
\nof a single moment, 1963, Rice puts Berlin, Miller and Faigley in conversation
\nand considers the significance of the ’63 CCCC in L.A. relative to cultural
\nstudies in composition, including Kitzhaber’s reservations about the writing
\nmachine’s mechanistic orientation. He also refers to Landow on students’
\nwriting from scraps using juxtaposition (26).<\/p>\n

The pedagogical approach, then, is combinatory, drawing together cultural
\nstudies, hypertext and juxtaposition. Their combination is demonstrated in
\nthe pursuit of cool writing. It is located in a particular moment and
\nproceeds, in the courses Rice explains, by considering cultural forces and by
\ncontrasting the idyllic and iconic set against the turbulent and detached (230).
\nMindful of two cools (one technological, the other social), students in the
\ncourses develop online handbooks of cool (how to write cool, not how to be
\ncool).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

"In addition, these sites [Netscape, Yahoo, etc.] proposed cool as long
\nlistings of out-of-the-ordinary web sites because of either design or content.
\nUsually, the more bizarre<\/b> or eclectic<\/b>, the cooler<\/b> the site"

"The lesson<\/b> of corporate usage of cool, then, it is a rhetorical<\/b>
\none. The pedagogical challenge is to resituate the popular application of cool
\nas an electronic and cultural phenomenon (TV and Web usage) into a curriculum<\/b>
\nthat teaches electronic rhetorical strategies<\/b>" (223).<\/p>\n

"The attempt by composition<\/b> studies to include cultural studies<\/b>
\nin its curriculum often concentrated on the questions or representation<\/b>,
\nideology<\/b>, and power<\/b>" (225). <\/p>\n

"What this brief survey of the field tells me, then, is that while
\ncultural studies<\/b> and hypertext<\/b> have been thought of as
\ninterconnected, and while hypertext<\/b> and juxtaposition<\/b> have been
\nconsidered interrelated, there still exists a need to bring all of these
\nitems together<\/b>" (226). <\/p>\n

"Engelbart’s writing machine resembled McLuhan’s cool mosaic, a
\ntechnologically shaped writing system where disciplines juxtapose with one
\nanother" (228). <\/p>\n

"The icon<\/b> motivates a form of discourse determined by juxtaposition<\/b>.
\nCelebrity images become appropriated and reentered into cultural expression by
\nway of unlikely arrangements<\/b>" (230). <\/p>\n

"The writer of the handbook<\/b> [Ars<\/i>], then, acted as a compiler<\/b>.
\nAny original writing<\/b> found itself lost<\/b> amid quoted texts" (231).<\/p>\n

"Borrowing from McLuhan’s 1963 musings on cool, Baudrillard deemed current
\ndiscourse cool because of its emphasis on commutation<\/b> rather than
\nsignification<\/b>. In cool discourse, Baudrillard claimed, ‘signs are
\nexchanged against each other rather than against the real<\/b>‘ (7). (233)"<\/p>\n

"With cool writing, the notion that the computer-networked classroom is a
\nplace for looking outward to cyberspace and its threatening, challenging,
\ndifferent ways of expression for purposes of evaluation and
\nanalysis becomes instead the idea that we are already in such a place<\/b> and
\nthat we bring to those situations cultural events, transformations, and
\nstrategies. (234)<\/p>\n
