<\/p>\n

Carlton levels a complicated argument about whether or not composition ought
\nto be framed as a discipline. She begins with North’s concerns about a
\npreponderance of lore and multiple, contending methods from The Making of
\nKnowledge in Composition<\/i>, and she echoes North’s "ambivalence" about
\nconferring disciplinary status on composition studies. Perhaps, Carlton
\nsuggests, a postdisciplinary characterization is more appropriate, given that
\npostdisciplinary practitioners "reproduce the complex features representative of
\ndisciplines" and they "generate material disciplinary apparatuses that make
\nrepresentation possible" (79) even while they "think and act beyond the limits
\nof the traditional discipline" (79).<\/p>\n

Carlton considers the rise of doctoral programs in composition (a turn
\ncommonly viewed a synonymous with professionalization and credentialing, which
\nalso render permanent a laboring underclass of contingent faculty). Especially
\nwith the production of composition studies (a kind of institutional "power
\nplay"), we must continue to be concerned with how we represent disciplinary
\nactivity (both textual and extratextual) in such a way that accounts for "a
\ncomplex set of cultural practices" (79). <\/p>\n

Included here is a recap of a disagreement between Janice Lauer and Patricia
\nHarkin at the ’91 CCCC in Boston over the status of lore as a legitimate form of
\ndisciplinary knowledge (reread this section). Carlton prefers a postdisciplinary
\nstance (an appropriation of the "post" logics figured in postructural currents)
\nover the antidisciplinary stance. Finally, the article argues that we must
\nexpand on programmatic and curricular gains and resist compromising lore or
\nfavoring a monolithic methodological orientation to gain disciplinary status.<\/p>\n

"Many of us in composition studies oscillate among these three attitudes of
\nambivalence, celebration, and hostility; but I believe that ambivalence is the
\nmost productive stance, as it acknowledges the complexity of composition
\nstudies’ relationship to the disciplinary apparatus<\/b>" (78).<\/p>\n

"Without denigrating our recent epistemological and ideological ventures, we
\ncan still claim that their continued transformative power is limited by the
\nextent to which we are able to make good decisions now about how to structure
\nthe current institutional spaces we inhabit<\/b> and how to construct additional
\ninstitutional spaces for ourselves" (80).<\/p>\n

"I agree with Rankin that if a type of knowledge or relationship is to
\nflourish within the university beyond a single classroom or a small, local
\ncommunity of practitioners, it must be coded<\/b> in a way that makes it
\ncongruent with contemporary ideas of what knowledge can be<\/i><\/b>" (82).<\/p>\n

"A rhizomatic structure<\/b> runs counter<\/b> to the prevailing norms
\nof disciplinarity<\/b>. It constitutes a material, extratextual critique and
\nalternative to a university norm" (82).<\/p>\n

"Why a teleconference? By using new technology<\/b>, the practitioners
\nrepresent their discussion as ‘cutting edge’ knowledge. By using expensive
\ntechnology, the practitioner conference acquires ‘value.’ These appeals to
\ndisciplinary, university codes of authority<\/b> allow a postdisciplinary
\npractice to be smuggled<\/b> in under the very gaze of the disciplinarians<\/b>"
\n(83).<\/p>\n

"Instead, we need a critical mass<\/b> of compositionists in tenured
\npositions<\/b>, not a few isolated and outnumbered representatives, if we are
\ngoing to expand the spaces for cultural critique and democratic action" (84).<\/p>\n
