<\/p>\n

Vitanza introduces a third "seeing" to the seeing\/not seeing dyad.  With
\nit, he sets up a correlation between theory and seeing (etymologically, drawing
\non Gk. thea<\/i> and also Williams’ Keywords<\/i>). From here, he accounts
\nfor the shortcomings of dialectics resulting from the faintness of the
\nnegatives<\/b> (no longer can we test "the pagus<\/i> of thought" and return
\nfrom the "wild, savage border zone where the excluded thirds and their ways of
\nseeing dwell" (166) to effect a more inclusive polis). Vitanza offers three
\nSophistic ways of seeing:<\/p>\n

1. misrepresentative antidotes<\/b>: counter to representative anecdotes
\n(168)<\/p>\n

2. dissoi-paralogoi<\/b>: counter to dialectics–"against dialectic (of any
\nkind), against didactic, and against dissoi-logoi<\/i> by moving from one and
\ntwo to an explosion of threes or ‘some more’ (excesses, dissoi-polylogoi<\/i>)"
\n(168).<\/p>\n

3. theatricks<\/b>: counter to pragmatics (168)<\/p>\n

Third Sophistic seeing will keep theorEYEzation alive, will continue to mine
\nthe pagus<\/i>.  Without it, theory stalls, potentiality is reduced,
\nstifled, and we have a restricted economy (Modernism’s scarcities?). Whatever
\nbeings (Agamben) "prefer not to be in the present reactionary community, prefer
\nnot to be complicit in employing the principle that excludes, prefer not to be
\nin the coming community" (173). <\/p>\n

Another point: Third Sophistic seeing is not<\/i> the same as
\nVictor Turner<\/a>‘s "liminal
\nspace"<\/b> (169).<\/p>\n

"‘Whatever beings’<\/b> are not particular (i.e., species) or general
\n(genus); instead, they are a set(less) of radical singularities<\/b> (in the
\nparalogic of the excluded Middle Ages, a.k.a. the manere<\/i> [27])." (171).<\/p>\n

"Whatever beings intuit that the principles of identity<\/b>,
\nnon-contradiction<\/b>, and excluded-middle<\/b> (all the principles of
\nnegation informing re\/invention) are the very principles that exclude, that
\ndisallow the thing with all its properties, that disallow radical
\nsingularities<\/b>, themselves as such, in community" (173).<\/p>\n

"Berger discusses ‘seeing’ as a matter of ideology and mystification" (165).\n<\/p>\n

"I used to believe that it was possible after leaving the polis<\/i> of
\nsystematic seeing to spend some paraproductive time in the pagus<\/i> of
\nthought–that wild, savage border zone where the excluded thirds and their ways
\nof seeing dwell–and then when done to return, with insights, to the polis so as
\nto make it more inclusive.  I still believe that such excursions are
\nvaluable, but they soon will be impossible" (166).<\/p>\n

"What will de\/form the coming community is without any notion of
\nantithesis<\/b> but only remainders<\/b>. Whatevers<\/b>!" (167). <\/p>\n

"According to Agamben, in The Coming Community<\/i>, the coming beings are
\n‘whatever beings’" (170).<\/p>\n
