<\/p>\n

Neel complicates the theory<\/b> and practice<\/b> polarities; he argues,
\nquite convincingly, that theory is not expendable<\/b>. Advanced through
\nanalogies to whaling<\/b>, the argument begins with an account of the Makah
\ntribe’s resumption of whaling practices in the Pacific Northwest in an effort to
\nrestore cultural heritage. Their whaling praxis was compromised and so they
\nsought to restore it. Neel tests the limits of this decision, noting that
\ncountertheories were well in place "by the time such a practice could be
\ndemonstrated theoretically as socially desirable" (5). <\/p>\n

From here, Neel works through multiple possible readings of the story of
\nJonah<\/b> and the whale–the least probable of which is a literal reading. In
\nother words, the perpetually re-cast, re-framed, re-interpreted allegory
\nsuggests the shifting enactments of theory. <\/p>\n

Ultimately, this is an argument for "Reclaiming Theory."<\/b> Neel contends
\nthat "Composition becomes mature, however, able to sustain itself, when it
\nconstantly scrutinizes its theoretical underpinnings" (9). He goes on, "It would
\nbe naive to retreat from theory<\/b>, and it would be exceedingly selfish,
\nbecause the only faculty who truly have the option of doing so already have
\ntenure and have already passed through the process of finding a voice with which
\nto speak" (10). <\/p>\n

"Theory forces one to interrogate one’s own position<\/b>. Ignorance of
\ntheory usually permits one to remain unaware that one holds a position, one of
\nmany possible positions, a position that can change. Ignorance of theory blinds
\none to the knowledge that changing one’s position changes what one sees and how
\none sees it" (11).<\/p>\n

"And does it matter if the Native Americans re-create the whale hunt using
\nmodern technology<\/b>? Radar and sonar to find the whales? Motorized boats to
\ncatch them? Harpoon canons that are much more accurate and have far greater
\nrange and power than harpoons thrown by hand?" (3). <\/p>\n

"For the practitioner, Stanley Fish’s old T-shirt with the question, Sure
\nit works in practice but will it work in theory<\/b>? is an ironic description,
