Hadn&#8217;t been to the gallery before, but several pieces produced by our<br \/>\nfriend (and former neighbor), Amy Bartell, were on display (some of it by such<br \/>\nenigmatic and inventive techniques I can&#8217;t get my mind off of it). I don&#8217;t have a<br \/>\nprogram with me now, and I couldn&#8217;t find the exact title for her exhibit online,<br \/>\nbut I think it was called &quot;Archeological Memoir.&quot; Basically, she works with<br \/>\nvarious materials (impressions, overlays, exposure, stamping) to layer together<br \/>\nwhat I would describe as &#8216;geographic impressions.&#8217; They&#8217;re not<br \/>\nimpressionist, in the sense of that tradition; rather they involve the <i>plying<\/i><br \/>\n(layering, doubling over, folding and folding) of found things (symbols and<br \/>\nmaterials)&#8211;a sandwiching effect by which their pressed-ness amplifies the deep<br \/>\nentanglement of place, object, and spatial imagination. I was struck by the<br \/>\ncollection because it resonated conceptually with some of the stuff you would<br \/>\nfind in Harmon&#8217;s <i>You Are Here<\/i> and at<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/strangemaps.wordpress.com\/\">Strange Maps<\/a>. This it to say it<br \/>\nhooked into the same way-finding attitude or manner I continue to find<br \/>\ntremendously appealing. But the pieces were also detailed and varied&#8211;as<br \/>\npastiche: <i>almost<\/i> imaginary <i>maps<\/i>, <i>almost<\/i> documentary, <i><br \/>\nalmost<\/i> autobiography. Digital versions of two of the pieces are online&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.delavanartgallery.com\/Bartell,%20Travelogue.htm\">Travelogue<\/a><br \/>\nand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delavanartgallery.com\/Bartell_combined.htm\">Your Call<br \/>\nCannot Be Completed At This Time<\/a>&#8211;but the entire exhibit is worth<br \/>\nexperiencing in its entirety, and because she does at least one show each year,<br \/>\nthere is a decent chance of catching it again in Central New York. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">\u23f3 Approximate reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">mins<\/span><\/span>A week ago Thursday we stopped through the closing reception of a show at the Delavan Art Gallery here in Syracuse.
