Early in The Function of Theory in Composition Studies<\/i>, S\u00e1nchez
\ndiscusses the differences between applying<\/i> theory and writing<\/i>
\ntheory. He refers to Hairston’s "The Winds of Change," as a moment that
\ninaugurates "an enduring method for ‘doing’ composition theory: take a term or
\nconcept from a more respected or respectable field such as philosophy and use it
\nto illuminate some aspect of composition studies" (12). The way<\/i> of
\ntheorizing about writing, according to S\u00e1nchez:
\nappropriate and apply, appropriate and apply. There follows a soft critique:
\nmethods in scare quotes (i.e., "predominant ‘methods’") and, within a few pages,
\na discussion of those who "have reasserted the importance of empirically
\noriented theorizing" (13). S\u00e1nchez echoes
\nLinda Flower with his interest in ways "that composition theory might generate
\nnew theories rather than retrofit existing ones" (14). I haven’t finished
\nreading The Function of…<\/i>, but I’m wondering at the end of the first
\nchapter whether the retrofit and the new can coexist, whether they are hybrid
\nand integral. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This feeds into another impression. In his chapter on "The
\nPhilosophers" (The Making of…<\/i>), North draws on a metaphor of the marina
\nto describe the group’s turn-style make-up:<\/p>\n

Given their backgrounds, the best first option of most of these movers
\n\t(i.e., Practitioners), is the Scholars’ community; and since Philosophical
\n\tinquiry, in an area still so new, is so wide open–requiring the least
\n\tretraining, demanding access to no special materials, and offering the
\n\tchance of relatively quick publication–many have given it a try. A few,
\n\tfrustrated by what they perceive as the limitations of Philosophical work,
\n\tare drawn on to try other modes of inquiry. Most presumably return to
\n\twhatever they did before, finding themselves uninterested in or not suited
\n\tfor the effort involved in sustained Philosophical inquiry. The resulting
\n\tdemographic pattern is rather like that of a marina: a small core of
\n\tfull-time residents; a larger group of longer-term types, who may stay as
\n\tlong as two or three years, or move in and out with some regularity; and
\n\tlots of one-time seasonal visitors who nevertheless–by sheet weight of
\n\tnumbers–leave their mark on the community.<\/i> And so, even though we
\n\tcan say that the community has developed a stronger sense of its own
\n\tidentity–especially, like the Historians, in terms of a more potent
\n\tcritical self-consciousness–there are in fact enormous individual
\n\tdifferences in the extent to which such a claim can be true. (92)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A long quotation, I know. I have italicized the line about the
\n"resulting demographic pattern," in part because I have been thinking about
\npatterns and disciplinarity, and I think that S\u00e1nchez
\nis building toward a discussion of pattern generation<\/i> (a theory of
\nwriting as pattern generation) in his push away from hermeneutics, away from
\nwriting as representation, and away from the appropriate\/apply method of
\ntheorizing. But I want to add an asterisk, a qualifier, to this
\nanticipatory sense of where S\u00e1nchez is
\ntaking me. Keeping with North’s marina metaphor, might it be that
\nprofessionalization and graduate training contribute to the appropriate-apply
\nmethod of theorizing writing? Even the multi-year residents at the Complandia
\nmarina moved there at some point, new to the neighborhood with their things not
\nfar behind. Among those things, square boxes packed with "Derrida, Foucault,
