Word around the house is that li<\/i>ttle mis<\/i>s you-know-who will be
\nsawing logs in her crib for the first time tonight, making the transition from
\nbassinet to crib (impermanent? Perhaps.). And while we were rearranging
\nthe furniture this morning (it’s okay; it’s ritual; often it all ends up back
\nwhere it started), I was reminded of just how comforting this
\nBebe
\nCare Angel Sounds Monitor<\/a><\/i> has been.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Basically, it’s a combination sound monitor and movement sensor.
\nA thin motion-sensing sheet lays flat under the baby’s foam mattress, and every
\nslight movement (breathing, stirring) signals to the pad that everything is
\na-okay, keeping the alarm quiet. Should the baby (or the motion-sensing sheet)
\nbecome perfectly still for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds, alerting the parents to
\nthe worrisome stillness. The downside is that the motionlessness!<\/i> alarm
\nscreams (after 20 seconds) when one of us lifts Is. from the bassinet and
\nforgets to flip the base to off. Yet another downside is that the sound monitor
\nis one-directional, so when Is. wakes from a nap (telecasting her fuss into the
\noffice), I can’t simply mash a button and radio back to her with instructions
\nfor returning to sleep.<\/p>\n

Really, the Angel Care Movement Sensor with Sound Monitor (holy
\ncrap, can they come up with a shorter name for this product?) is a gem.
\nCertainly, it is worth the price (even if ours was a gift), just in the nerves
\nit calms during the first few weeks at home. Plus, way I see it, with a gizmo such as this baby
\nis assured to be a cyborg (cybernetic organism) from day one.<\/p>\n

Added: Controversy?: D. read that some technophobes are claiming
\ndevices like this fundamentally alter the relation of the child to her surrounds
\nand renders parents less naturally<\/i> monitorial. We’d probably say it
