The Flickr blog<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.flickr.com\/flickrblog\/2006\/08\/geotagging_one_.html\">reports<\/a><br \/>\nan impressive surge in the geotagging of photographs with some 1.2 million<br \/>\ngeotagged in the first 24 hours after the feature&#8217;s rollout.<\/p>\n<p> Granted, if a<br \/>\nphoto already had geotags assigned, the new system automatically recognized<br \/>\nthem, so a fair portion of the 1.2 million were probably auto-assigned rather<br \/>\nthan initiated by Flickr users. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Several months ago I made use of some of the earlier geotagging efforts,<br \/>\nwhich established grid coordinates as tags unto themselves.<\/p>\n<p> The new<br \/>\nscheme, however, keeps the locative data under the hood and instead offers a<br \/>\nsimple link to a map alongside a label indicating &quot;Taken in\/near &lt;placename&gt;.&quot;\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33032196@N00\/190431004\/in\/photostream\/\"><br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/img\/flickrmap.jpg?resize=432%2C299&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"432\" height=\"299\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After months of thinking they were defunct, it turns out that all of the old<br \/>\ngeotags haven&#8217;t gone to waste.<\/p>\n<p> They&#8217;re working to post the photos assigned<br \/>\ngeographic data in the tags to sites like<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/loc.alize.us\/#\/geo:43.02699,-76.13182,12,m\/\">loc.alize.us<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/loc.alize.us\/#\/geo:43.02699,-76.13182,12,m\/\"><br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/img\/localizeus.jpg?resize=432%2C261&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"432\" height=\"261\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">\u23f3 Approximate reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">min<\/span><\/span>Flickr launched a new geotagging feature this week (via).
