I remember where I was on Fourths better<br \/>\nthan any other day of the year (for years afterward, that is). Fourths are<br \/>\ndistinctly eventful. The older I get, the less I like the celebrations though. Anti-patriotic?<br \/>\nNah. Celebratorily ambivalent when it comes to fireworks on the Fourth. Bombs<br \/>\nbursting in air, cinders raining down, the dulled out masses of cricked necks<br \/>\nturned skyward, a hypnotic <i>ooh<\/i>ing and <i>aah<\/i>ing to exploding light.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s not the holiday; it&#8217;s the cliched fireworks shows. I just can&#8217;t get into<br \/>\nthem (beyond <i>wow, that was something<\/i>). But I probably sound like a crank.&nbsp;<br \/>\nI keep going to them, anxiously watching for the bigger blast than last year and<br \/>\nthe extension of the show just when you thought it was over.&nbsp; Past Fourths:<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve starred them all on this <a href=\"http:\/\/quikmaps.com\/show\/4425\">quikmap<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/quikmaps.com\/ext\/4425?w=552&#038;mh=383&#038;t=1&#038;ln=0&#038;sn=1&#038;zb=0&#038;zs=0&#038;d=1&#038;it=0&#038;icd=0&#038;lat=32.376405123729654&#038;lng=-86.3525390625&#038;zl=4&#038;mt=0\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"554\" height=\"411\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Flashes, memories of 4th of July and place:<\/p>\n<p>Late 1970&#8217;s: My grandparents&#8217; drive-way on Drummond Island. Safe-works, all<br \/>\nsparklers and snakes. Grand finale: something tank-shaped that spun and popped.<br \/>\nThe flowing goo of writhing carbon snakes: <i>wow, that was something<\/i>. I was<br \/>\ninto the sparklers, too. Two at a time to keep it dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>1984: Independence, Mo. My brother and I were staying in the duplex where my<br \/>\naunt and uncle lived. Only they were gone to Denver, so our grandmother was<br \/>\nwatching us. The entire complex of apartments was crawling with kids, the<br \/>\ngrounds ascramble with bottle rocket battles. Only we weren&#8217;t allowed out past<br \/>\ndark. Too risky. Grandma was a worrier. I think I remember that we tried her<br \/>\nnerved by staying out past the first edge of evening. And then paid dearly for<br \/>\nit. Still, my aunt and uncle brought back giant jawbreakers from their short<br \/>\ntrip to Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>A year later? Or two. This time with another aunt. We left Lansing, Mich. and<br \/>\ntraveled through the night toward Kansas City. I was eleven or twelve. I watched<br \/>\nout the car window (a Chevette, I think) for all of the fireworks shows between<br \/>\nLansing and Indianapolis. And then I fell asleep. I was supposed to stay awake,<br \/>\nhelp her stay awake (changing radio stations, chattering on about how scenic<br \/>\nsouth-central Illinois was). When I woke up on the Fifth, we were just leaving<br \/>\nSt. Louis. The I-70 corridor was a fireworks paradise with bright yellow tents<br \/>\nparked at every exit for 270 miles.<\/p>\n<p>1996: Saginaw Bay, Mich. I&#8217;d just taken my first job after undergrad, moved<br \/>\nfrom KC to Saginaw, and was handling claims for damaged property following a<br \/>\nwall of tornados from Frankenmuth to Bay City. A small cooler of beer, a<br \/>\ncookout.
