{"id":6427,"date":"2005-10-10T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-10-10T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/10\/sidewalk-1999-a\/"},"modified":"2005-10-10T19:00:00","modified_gmt":"2005-10-10T19:00:00","slug":"sidewalk-1999-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/10\/sidewalk-1999-a\/","title":{"rendered":"<i>Sidewalk<\/i> (1999) and Method"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">\u23f3 Approximate reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">mins<\/span><\/span><p>Mitchell Duneier&#8217;s <i>Sidewalk<\/i> is a multi-year ethnographic study of the<br \/>\ninformal mercantile and social activity covering a three-block zone in Greenwich<br \/>\nVillage.&nbsp; Duneier, now a professor of sociology at Princeton, overhauled<br \/>\nhis study after his initial project focused too heavily on a singular &quot;public<br \/>\ncharacter&quot;&#8211;Hakim, a respected book vendor who often acted as a leader, an &quot;old<br \/>\nhead&quot; who mentored others, who advocated for GED completion, and who eventually<br \/>\nco-taught a course at UCSB with Duneier.&nbsp; Although <i>Sidewalk<\/i> reads<br \/>\neasily as a sociological research project unto itself, we could view it as an<br \/>\nupdate to Jane Jacobs&#8217;s 1961 project on the complex social, spatial, economic<br \/>\nand architectural dynamics of the street in New York City,<br \/>\n<a  href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0679600477\/102-0932333-0332114?v=glance\"><br \/>\n<i>The Death and the Life of Great American Cities<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Methodologically, <i>Sidewalk<\/i> is ethnographic; a participant-observer,<br \/>\nDuneier spends countless hours on-site, taking notes and recording<br \/>\nconversations.&nbsp; Shots by photographer Ovie Carter are interspersed with<br \/>\nDuneier&#8217;s research account and narratives.&nbsp; The photos are subtle and<br \/>\nquiet; without captions, they comply with Duneier&#8217;s telling, more often as<br \/>\nvisual complements than visual disruptions.&nbsp; In other words, there&#8217;s little<br \/>\ndiscord between Duneier&#8217;s writing and the photographs selected for use in the<br \/>\nbook, and Duneier&#8217;s prose rarely refers directly to the photos.<\/p>\n<p>Does Duneier enact imitable methods?
