{"id":6381,"date":"2005-08-20T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-08-20T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/2005\/08\/20\/amphigeography\/"},"modified":"2005-08-20T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2005-08-20T23:00:00","slug":"amphigeography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/2005\/08\/20\/amphigeography\/","title":{"rendered":"Amphigeography and Doppelspace"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">\u23f3 Approximate reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">mins<\/span><\/span><p>Roland Barthes in <i>Roland Barthes<\/i> on Amphibologies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  [I]n general, the context forces us to choose one of the two meanings and<br \/>\n  to forget the other.&nbsp; Each time he encounters one of these double words,<br \/>\n  R.B., on the contrary insists on keeping both meanings, as if one were winking<br \/>\n  at the other and as if the word&#8217;s meaning were in that wink, so that <i>one<br \/>\n  and the same words<\/i>, in <i>one and the same sentence<\/i>, means <i>at one<br \/>\n  and the same time<\/i> two different things, and so that one delights,<br \/>\n  semantically, in the other by the other.&nbsp; This is why such words are<br \/>\n  often said to be &quot;preciously ambiguous&quot;: not in their lexical essence (for any<br \/>\n  word in the lexicon has several meanings), but because, by any kind of <i>luck<\/i>,<br \/>\n  a kind of favor not of language but of discourse, I can <i>actualize<\/i> their<br \/>\n  amphibology, can say &#8216;intelligence&#8217; and appear to be referring chiefly to the<br \/>\n  intellective meaning, but letting the meaning of &#8216;complicity&#8217; be <i>understood<\/i><br \/>\n  (72).\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s something to this passage that I can&#8217;t quite put my finger on.&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhat if we spin it around from word-sentence semantics to image-space rhetorics?&nbsp;<br \/>\nI love R.B.&#8217;s notion of meanings winking.&nbsp; My mother-in-law is a winker,<br \/>\nand so I&#8217;ve come to know the wink-gesture by her sometimes surprising use of it<br \/>\n(when the hyper-winking takes off at a family get-together, what does it <i>all<\/i><br \/>\nmean?).&nbsp; Take the word-meaning wink and replace it with an image-meaning<br \/>\nwink.&nbsp; What do we have? (With this, I&#8217;m asking about more than the problem<br \/>\nof a helluva lot of winking.)<\/p>\n<p>I suppose this doesn&#8217;t make much sense (yet!).&nbsp; I&#8217;m thinking about the<br \/>\ndoubling of the <i>virtual<\/i> and the <i>actual\/real<\/i>&#8211;the tense play<br \/>\nbetween Google Maps&#8217; satellite imagery and the scripted layers (intricately<br \/>\nspatialized, discursive).&nbsp; Something, somehow is winking between the<br \/>\n<a  href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33032196@N00\/tags\/thorndenpark\/\"><br \/>\namateur photos<\/a> (images of finds, things <i>I<\/i> notice) and the<br \/>\n<a  href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=43.041544,-76.125641&#038;spn=0.011382,0.040525&#038;t=h&#038;hl=en\"><br \/>\nplaces<\/a>.&nbsp; But the wink is elusive, often subtle; the two+ spaces (a park<br \/>\nI walk through and a park on my computer screen&#8230;and on the news, and in the<br \/>\nphoto-image) entangled in the documentary activity. It&#8217;s writing, yes?&nbsp;<br \/>\nThis thing&#8211;amphigeography&#8211;takes on, maybe confronts, the latency of spatial<br \/>\ndiscourse.&nbsp; Read through the influx of Google Maps hacks, it might be<br \/>\ncalled the event of the summer&#8211;a felicitous and widely celebrated image-space<br \/>\nwink-fest. <\/p>\n<p>Remaining: to spatialize discursive shards&#8211;finds, whats&#8217;its, orts&#8211;all<br \/>\npunctumoniously abuzz and stinging, fiercely kindled by desires split by the<br \/>\nobvious, boring and banal-bland and, on the other hand, the unspeakable,<br \/>\nself-doubting, wonder-lost (is it nothing?).
