Broader questions&#8211;likely explained by Stone elsewhere&#8211;fold into this,<br \/>\nsuch as the degree to which technologies bring about changes in consciousness<br \/>\n(what we mean by <i>attention<\/i>?) or whether the attention-fragmenting domain<br \/>\nnow filled up with the digital apparatus simply presents us with more<br \/>\ninterferences and distractions (material and informational).&nbsp; The notes<br \/>\n(which I&#8217;m taking as reasonably reliable) have these as Stone&#8217;s closing<br \/>\ncomments:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The next aphrodisiac is committed full-attention focus. In this new area,<br \/>\n  experiencing this engaged attention is to feel alive. Trusted filters, trusted<br \/>\n  protectors, trusted concierge, human or technical, removing distractions and<br \/>\n  managing boundaries, filtering signal from noise, enabling meaningful<br \/>\n  connections, that make us feel secure, are the opportunity for the next<br \/>\n  generation. Opportunity will be the tools and technologies to take our power<br \/>\n  back.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have any brilliant conclusions to report (might try, though, if I&#8217;d<br \/>\nhave been there). The notes on the talk and the conference&#8217;s theme, I find<br \/>\ninteresting.&nbsp; The periodization of computing&#8211;twenty year cycles flipping<br \/>\nbetween individualist models and social models&#8211;leaves me with questions about<br \/>\nits predictive legitimacy&#8211;rings of a <i>social turn<\/i>, more recently to full<br \/>\nblown networkacy.&nbsp; And this turn, Stone projects, is answered by what&#8217;s<br \/>\ncoming next, a return of sorts to individualistic attention control&#8211;more fixed,<br \/>\nrestrictively channeled attention structures.&nbsp; Or at the very least, a<br \/>\ngreater measure of agency in the network.
