After reading Collin’s entry on

\nScreencasting and FYC<\/a>, I decided to see whether I could line up a free
\nscreencasting app.  For kicks as much as for generative digression, asides
\nfrom more demanding and rigorous projects occupying my time as the semester
\nrolls to a conclusion, of late I’ve felt compelled to tinker with new
\nsoftware–"new" in the sense that I don’t have a terrific aptitude for using it. 
\nFor the most part, I’ve been messing around with Flash lately, while taking
\nbreaks from writing.  But screencasting…never given it much thought. 
\nAll the motive I need.<\/p>\n

I poked around the web, following the link to
\nWill
\nRichardson’s entry<\/a> and
\n
\nJon Udell’s column<\/a>.  Then, by way of
\nanother site<\/a>,
\nI found the
\nentry<\/a> in wikipedia on screencasting, and then, checked out each of the
\nsoftware apps listed.  Let. Me. See. 
\n
\nCamtasia 2.1 for $299<\/a> or
\nWink 1.5<\/a> for free.
\nCamtasia?  Wink?  Camtasia?  Wink? <\/p>\n

Wink 1.5 doesn’t have audio capabilities yet (I read somewhere that the 2.0
\nconcept includes audio and an undo option), but other than that, I’ve found it
\nsurprisingly feature-rich.  Plus, it’s easy to use (not for Mac, but as a
\nPC user, no Garageband or TinderBox for me now, either).  Capturing,
\ncropping, resizing, adding comment balloons and next arrows–all a breeze. 
\nProbably a sluggish download, but
\n
\nhere’s my unremarkable first try<\/a>. Basically, it’s just a few screenshots clicking through the stuff I’m writing about here, links and so on.<\/p>\n

I didn’t plan it carefully before I put it together; hence, in the first
\ntry<\/i> you’ll see an odd mix of tabbing between the stuff on screencasting and
\nother stuff I was looking at today on
\n
\nGoogle Print<\/a> (check it out, if you haven’t already).  I was encouraged
\nto find several texts related to
\n
\ncomp\/rhet<\/a> rendered into searchable goodness.  Really something, that.<\/p>\n

I don’t have any decided conclusions about screencasting and FYC; mostly I’m
\njust thinking it over.  But I think it productively excites the "what if"
\nquestions we need to continually ask and answer (ahem…act upon)–about the
\nimplications of discord (or outright contradiction) between cross-disciplinary
\nprinciples and however-wrought conceptions of what constitutes composition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
