{"id":6091,"date":"2004-05-17T22:44:54","date_gmt":"2004-05-17T22:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/2004\/05\/17\/out-the-way-coa\/"},"modified":"2004-05-17T22:44:54","modified_gmt":"2004-05-17T22:44:54","slug":"out-the-way-coa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/2004\/05\/17\/out-the-way-coa\/","title":{"rendered":"Out the Way, Coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">\u23f3 Approximate reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">mins<\/span><\/span><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n  <center><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" width=\"85%\">\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\" align=\"center\">\n      Before<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\" align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/img\/stampede1.jpg?resize=297%2C223&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"297\" height=\"223\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\" align=\"center\">&#8230;middle school&#8230;hoops practice&#8230;pass a<br \/>\n      few years&#8230;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\" align=\"center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.earthwidemoth.com\/blog\/img\/stampede.jpg?resize=297%2C177&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"297\" height=\"177\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\" align=\"center\">After<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>  <\/center>\n<\/div>\n<p>Organized a Stampede swimming party yesterday at North Kansas City Community<br \/>\nCenter.&nbsp; It was my farewell to the young men who&#8217;ve done mostly what I<br \/>\nasked on the basketball court for the last four years.&nbsp; Fine times.<\/p>\n<p>Not much of a before and after comparison.&nbsp; The crew on the left (in<br \/>\nfifth grade, three years ago) morphed into the group on the right (yesterday&#8217;s<br \/>\nbunch).&nbsp; Along the way, we expanded to two teams, holding open roster spots<br \/>\nfor seventeen players this past winter.&nbsp; And, although I confess to whining<br \/>\nonce in a while, joking that it was a mistake to take on so much, I can&#8217;t say<br \/>\nI&#8217;d change any of it, trade any of the kids or their families for different<br \/>\nones.&nbsp; Six of them didn&#8217;t make it yesterday for the swimming and<br \/>\npizza.&nbsp; Baseball, church stuff, graduations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My talk was briefer than usual yesterday; the lifeguard interrupted me to go<br \/>\nover the important pool rules.&nbsp; I told the boys and their families two<br \/>\nthings:&nbsp; 1.&nbsp; Young players shouldn&#8217;t play for the same coach for more<br \/>\nthan four years (which means my time is rightly served and we&#8217;re both better for<br \/>\nit being done), and 2.&nbsp; Second place is a better teacher than first place<br \/>\n(note that everyone was holding second place trophies from this winter&#8211;both<br \/>\nteams, green and blue, finished one spot behind an unbeaten squad in their<br \/>\nrespective leagues).&nbsp; All in all, we finished with a record of 60-32 over<br \/>\nfour years&#8211;including a couple of first places, second places, and even, um,<br \/>\nwell, a winless season in Smithville (against older kids).&nbsp; In late<br \/>\nDecember, we even matched up with an &quot;eighth grader&quot; who dunked three<br \/>\ntimes against us in a 90-something-to-much-less-than-90 blowout.&nbsp; Some days<br \/>\nthere just weren&#8217;t enough timeouts.&nbsp; Still have a few t-shirts in a box if<br \/>\nfaithful EWM readers want to claim one (various sizes, athletic gray).&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey&#8217;re like the one A.
