Pixton

I spent time in class today introducing ENGL328ers to a variety of comic writing applications and platforms, the latest of which is Pixton. Pixton is the best thing to come along in template-driven web comics. The site offers several templates–a fairly comprehensive suite of modular figures to be repositioned, stylized, and otherwise modified (color, rotation, size, flip, etc.). For more context, follow the discussion here, and check out user Brunswick’s “The Simplest Comic Ever.”

Here’s my first run at Pixton.

Were I not so much in the weeds following CCCC (e.g., I found frisbees stuffed in my campus mailbox, for Pete’s sake), I would create two or three more.

  1. Awesome! We’re adding to our library all the time, and it’s also easy to create your own comics from scratch! If you want more creative freedom, you can also click and drag your character into any position… looks like you’re getting the hang of it really quickly!

  2. You have just made my life so much easier the next time I teach my Graphic Memoir course. Comic Life worked for students who had Macs or were willing to go to the libraries or labs to use the Macs there, but it’ll be nice to teach students one process.

  3. It’s a terrific app, Clive. I am, as my artistically disinclined students are, enjoying it.

Yes, Steve, lunch soon. La Casita for pozole?

Nels, my students are finding Pixton much to their liking. We’ve already started talking about mash-ups, though. Some students wanted to use additional backgrounds, such as photos and screen shots. Many of them use the free trial version of Comic Life, and they could integrate a variety of frames that way. Oh, and, graphic memoir, eh? Sounds like a great course.
