Sure, they’ve been around for a while, so it’s a sliver shy of revolutionary
that I’m calling your attention to the gamecast college basketball
visualizations provided by ESPN.com.
There’s something subtly inviting for me in the gliding mouse-over of the
running score for a full game. Pause at a spot; get the score for that
moment in the game. My only complaint: after the game has ended, the
scores page drops the gamecast link and you have to wait a few minutes for the
running score chart to be available again in the recap. Still, much better
than anything going at CNNSI or CBS Sportsline (play-by-plays, stats leaders,
etc.).
Pretty cool; I’ll have to try it. I hope it functions better than the Gametracker broadcasts, to which I’ve been consigned in order to follow some of the WVU men’s and Colgate women’s games. Gametracker tends to freeze about 5 minutes before the conclusion of the match. Not. very. nice.
I’m curious if they provide the score visualizations for every game or if it’s only for top-25 or major conferences. I didn’t check whether they had it for Colgate. Of course, I’m most interested in adapting the interface for other stuff like reading families of terms across the fifty-year history of CCC and such. 😉
I “watch” my beloved (and 16-0!) Gators on ESPN.com a lot, and the broadcast freezes a lot. I have to reload all the time.
I haven’t been able to figure out the way they pick the games which are scored live. My guess is it has to do with whatever statistics agencies (Elias, etc) are present.
The Gators are on a tear, and they have a string of winnable games remaining. First loss at Tennesee? Or will they go undefeated? SU and UConn tomorrow night should worth watching, too.
I’ve had the game-flow screen hang a few times. The auto refresh is semi-reliable at best. And I think you’re right about the statistics processing. ESPN must have an application (or require hosting schools to have some software) that syncs with the courtside statistics-keeping.
